Abstract

This hands-on workshop introduces language teachers to AI-assisted coding ('vibecoding') as a powerful new avenue for creating language learning applications. While AI-driven coding is a rapidly growing use case within the generative AI industry, its potential impact on education - and language learning in particular - remains underexplored. The session highlights how recent advances in code generation open up pedagogical opportunities that were previously inaccessible to non-specialists.

Participants are guided through the landscape of AI coding tools and the development process behind existing educational apps, before building their own language learning application during the workshop. Using Gemini and Google AI Studio, the session demonstrates how educators can design, prototype, and deploy simple apps without prior programming expertise.

Beyond technical skills, the workshop invites critical reflection on the pedagogical possibilities enabled by AI-assisted app creation, including new forms of learner interaction, personalisation, and task design. It encourages participants to consider how vibecoding can reshape language teaching practices and expand the role of teachers as designers of innovative digital learning experiences.

About the speaker

Dominik Lukes is AI Consultant at the AI Competency Centre at the University of Oxford. He founded the Reading and Writing Innovation Lab at Oxford in 2021, focusing on technology-enhanced reading and writing practices. He authored the Oxford report \"Beyond ChatGPT: State of AI in Education 2023\" and developed an AI Task Evaluation framework for educational contexts. His background includes computational linguistics and natural language processing since the 1990s, with research interests in metaphor, discourse analysis, and language education. He publishes the AI in Academic Practice Newsletter on LinkedIn.
